How Beauty Met The Beast, Jax Garren (Once Upon A Time Blog Hop)

OTBWe literally cut our teeth on fairy tales and happy endings. Life can be tough, gritty, sad and unexplainable. But gosh darn it, our hero and heroine can live on to fight the good fight or dare I say it live Happily Ever After!

How Beauty Met Beast PictureHow Beauty Met The Beast (Tales of The Underlight 1) Jax Garren,

Beautiful Jolie Benoit is not like the rest of her rich family. She is a burlesque dancer working her way through grad school, when she meets the beast, a member of the Underlight, an underground community of productive and destructive members of society fighting the good fight. Wesley “Hauk” Haukon is scarred from a brutal stint in Afghanistan, he introduces Jolie to the Underlight not knowing he has just brought in the enemies daughter.

Three Crowns, swagger jacked, decent read. I enjoyed the first book in the Underlight series. I know some people may not consider this a true steampunk but I think it is great for lightly introducing someone to the genre. Her characters were fresh and I could picture the world. I want to know more about the bellman, Jolie’s niece, the professor who are all secondary characters because she made them so interesting. I do see Jolie and Wesley’s relationship growing, they had chemistry and you start to see the beautiful Jolie looking forward to seeing him and wanting to know more about him. Basically it rang true to life. Women we have all met men who may not have been our type, but their swagger or personality moved them up the hot scale. One thing I should point out is there is magic vaguely mentioned in the book and I was unable to understand what it had to do with the story and the H/H. Three Crowns, swagger jacked, decent read. I’m a total sucker for “fairy tale” type stories, anything from Cinderella (my personal favorite) to Beauty and The Beast. With that being said I was super excited to read this book. Wesley Haukon sounded just like what my daydreams would reflect, damaged on the outside, while inside appearing strong*sighs*. Jolie, Jolie, Jolie was another story! I felt she was stringing Wesley along and I wasn’t feeling her. I felt she didn’t deserve him. My main problem with the book was the world building or should I say lack thereof. If you pointed a gun to my head and said explain the Underlight, I’m afraid you’d have to shoot me. I hate to steal a quote but I’m going to use a phrase I heard Britney Spears say on XFactor “I don’t get it”. I know this was a novella but if you are going to make the world complicated you need to give a clear and accurate description, no easy feat. My words to the author well played your hero sold the book.
